<image:caption>During the Civil Rights Movement, blacks developed an interest in Africa. Myrrh was helping in a black neighborhood where Mothers For Equal Education started Nairobi Day School in 1966. Myrrh painted this for them. Later, the founder, Gertrude Wilks, spoke out against drug dealers. They burned down the building where this was hanging.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In 1964, LBJ made what had been a small effort in Vietnam into an all-out war. Nixon continued it in 1969. Myrrh made this woodcut poster in 1971 when peace protests had been unable to stop it. Two years later, Myrrh collaged the latest war news on it. Communist North Vietnam overcame the South, our ally, in 1975.</image:caption>

Thousands sewed three-foot strips for The Ribbon. On the 40th anniversary of Hiroshima, they paraded 10 miles of them in Washington; on the same day, they encircled the monument in Hiroshima. <image:caption>During Reagan's second term, the 1985 meeting with the new Soviet leader, Gorbachev, changed Reagan. He began working to reduce the threat of war – a bit. Today, his former Secretary of State, George Shultz, is a leader in the move to rid the world of nuclear weapons. 90% of them have been dismantled, but one is too many. 90% of stockpiles have been destroyed.  </image:caption>

<image:caption>From the smallest to the largest, scientists delve deep. • The smallest are subatomic particles, unseeable, but they leave tracks. That's what atoms are made of. • Our DNA is a big molecule, made of several different kinds of atoms. • The hands of mother and child, that is, us. • With rockets, we can see Earth from space. • Earth would be just a speck on our sun. • Our sun is a speck at the edge of a spiral galaxy that has 100 million other stars.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Essential Mysteries of Science - Emergence</image:title>
<image:caption>These paintings all treat emergence and complexity. When a large variety of chemicals, or materials, or ideas are available, it means that some will combine in a novel way to produce an effect that has an emergent property. Myrrh has been attracted to “emergent phenomena” at certain boundaries, like between non-life and life... also attracted to “criticality,” that feature of complex systems that makes the usual behavior of digestion, of forests or of Wall Street trading possible, yet vulnerable.  </image:caption>

      <image:title>Patterns in Nature - Appalachians</image:title>
<image:caption>Another process that imitates natural patterns, she created “mountains” by crumpling paper and spray painting it with different colors, using dark colors for the shadows. Afterward. she flattened it, but it retained a 3D appearance. The Appalachians have rows of ridges, owing to the horizontal layers of sediments that were folded like corrugated cardboard by the forces of continental drift.</image:caption>

      <image:title>1987 Iran-Contra Scandal - Arthur L. Liman</image:title>
<image:caption>Chief Counsel for the Iran-Contra Committee, Liman saw Iran-Contra as a deliberate effort to conduct foreign policy in secret by using a private organization motivated by profit and accountable to no one. He used his experience as a brilliant prosecuting attorney to elicit damning information.</image:caption>

<image:caption>An ex-Air Force major general and ex-CIA agent, Secord teamed up with Albert Hakim in 1983 to start The Enterprise. Beginning 1985, it operated sub rosa Contra aid activities for their friend, Oliver North; in 1986, it became an agent for selling arms to Iran—all this for a hefty profit. It was patterned on CIA covert operations, but avoided supervision by congress.</image:caption>

      <image:title>1987 Iran-Contra Scandal - Manuchar Ghorbanifar</image:title>
<image:caption>(Didn't testify). An Iranian insider so indispensable to the CIA and the NSC, they kept working with him even though he repeatedly lied. He pulled the White House into wild deals with Iran, and none went well. He persuaded the US to secretly sell TOW missiles to Iran for its war with Iraq, thus violating an embargo. In exchange, Iran would release US hostages in Lebanon, (but almost none were). Meanwhile The Enterprise was using profits from the deal to aid the Contras (and enrich themselves). When a Lebanese newspaper broke the story, the scandal was exposed.</image:caption>

      <image:title>1987 Iran-Contra Scandal - Robert McFarlane</image:title>
<image:caption>Former Marine Robert McFarlane was National Security Advisor from 1984 to 1985 when the Boland Amendment forbad any activities to support the Contras by the CIA or DOD. Dubious about President Reagan’s use of the NSC staff in the White House to evade the Amendment, he nevertheless obeyed orders. Col. Oliver North worked under him, but did not tell McFarlane all he was doing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dutton was a retired Air Force colonel. He ran a private group that airdropped weapons and medical supplies to the Contras. <image:title>1987 Iran-Contra Scandal - Oliver North</image:title>
<image:caption>North was on the National Security Counsel staff in the White House. Unlike the CIA, it was not subject to congressional oversight. He hired Secord to run a CIA-type operation. Hewas the representative to the Contras, giving them US intelligence illegally. He set up a military system, gradually gaining oversight of every phase if it. He made and executed policies. Only National Security Counsel McFarlane and McFarlane’s successor, Poindexter, got his reports. It was all unconstitutional, but he portrayed himself as the victimized hero, and mostly got off scot-free.</image:caption>

      <image:title>1987 Iran-Contra Scandal - John Poindexter</image:title>
<image:caption>Poindexter became National Security Adviser (NSA) after Robert McFarlane, and was North’s boss. Counsel Liman wrote: “He had briefed the president every morning on matters affecting national security. Among the topics were the missile sales to Iran and the secret support of the Contras.” He thought staff responsibility was to protect its leader. Is this why, when the scandal broke, Reagan sounded sadly misinformed?</image:caption>

<image:caption>In January 1986 he wrote a legal opinion that the secret arms sales to Iran were legal, in spite of the embargo. On November 3, 1986, a Lebanese newspaper reported the sale. After the administration beat around the bush, Meese’s press conference on November 25 revealed the diversion of funds from Iran arms sales to the Contras. He spoke carefully to cover up the extent of the plot. The same day, Poindexter resigned and North was fired.</image:caption>

      <image:title>1987 Iran-Contra Scandal - Caspar Weinberger</image:title>
<image:caption>As Secretary of Defense, he joined with Secretary of State George Shultz to vehemently oppose the arms-for-hostages deal with Iran in May 1985. Yet, when asked to arrange arms transfers in February 1986, he found a sutrefuge to evade the embargo. In 1991, after the Hearings, thousands of pages of his notes were found in the Library of Congress, and he was charged with perjury and obstruction. The elder President Bush pardoned him.</image:caption>

      <image:title>1987 Iran-Contra Scandal - George Shultz</image:title>
<image:caption>President Reagan was stubbornly committed to the Contra cause, and ignored Shultz’ advice to stay within the law. And, Reagan’s instinct was to free hostages at whatever cost. When trading arms for hostages was proposed at a meeting on August 6, 1985, Shultz and Weinberger strenuously objected. When the scandals began to erupt, Shultz was the one who related all the facts to Reagan, and showed him how he had been misled.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Metaphysics – A personal journey - Benzene</image:title>
<image:caption>In many cases no one model describes something rather complicated, like benzene, so scientists use multiple working hypotheses. The structure of benzene was a puzzle until the chemist, Kekulé, had a dream of a snake biting its tail. But a simple diagram of a ring of atoms didn’t describe all its behaviors. Another example is light, which seems to be a wave when measured some ways, particles when measured other ways.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The problem of whether light is a particle or a wave suggested a way of looking at the Divine. Is God a noun (with an emphasis on certainty)? Is God a verb (with an emphasis on ever-changingness)? I created a moiré pattern for the central image, made up of two layers, dots and radiating stripes. It creates a third pattern indescribable on a flat surface.</image:caption>
